How to make a formation chart

  1. Step 1

    Match the stage

    Enter the real width and depth. The chart is drawn to scale in 1-metre squares, so two squares on screen is two metres in the studio.

  2. Step 2

    Add your dancers

    Set a count, then name them — or paste a whole list into the first name box. Each dancer keeps a colour and initials.

  3. Step 3

    Place them

    Start from a layout, then drag individual dancers. Snap-to-¼ m keeps spacing even; switch it off for freer placement.

  4. Step 4

    Share it

    Download a PNG for the group chat or the studio wall, or copy a link that reopens this exact formation.

Tips for cleaner formations

Use the dashed centre line — most formations are symmetrical around it, and audiences notice when they are not. Stagger rows (a “window” layout) so every dancer in the back row is visible between two in the front. And leave at least a metre between dancers who travel, so transitions have room.

Is this formation maker really free?

Yes. It runs entirely in your browser, needs no account, and has no usage limit. Formations are not saved on a server — download a PNG or copy the share link to keep one.

How do I share a formation with my dancers?

Click "Copy share link". The link contains the whole formation — stage size, names, and positions — so anyone who opens it sees exactly what you made. You can also download a PNG and drop it into your group chat.

How many dancers can I place?

Up to 40 dancers on a stage from 2 × 2 m up to 30 × 20 m. The grid is drawn in 1-metre squares so spacing on the chart matches spacing on the floor.

Which way does the stage face?

The audience is at the bottom of the chart (downstage), which is the convention most choreographers and stage managers use. Upstage is the top edge. Stage left and right are the performer's left and right, facing the audience.

Can I plan multiple formations and transitions?
